Der Erikönig' ist eine Arbeit, die auf einem Lied Schuberts mit dem Namen Der Erlkönig' oder 'Roi Des Aunes' basiert, das wiederum auf ein Gedicht Goethes zurückgreift, in dem ein Kind durch eine übernatürliche Kraft - dem Erkönig - angegriffen wird. Die Arbeit, von Heller als Ballade bezeichnet setzt sich mit der Geschichte mithilfe ihrer Charaktere auseinander und enthält Dramatik, geheimnisumwobene Ereignisse und Spannung. die durch Hellers leidenschaftliche Melodien und seine Fähigkeit, gefühlvoll für das Klavier zu schreiben, hervorragend umgesetzt werden.
