Book excerpt: This book tells the ongoing struggle of stolen baby victims of Spain as they search for truth, justice and reconciliation. Based on the authors' interviews with victims, well over 300, and on their experiences in filming the award-winning documentary of the same name (Stolen Babies of Spain) this book provides detailed, first-hand accounts of how mothers and families were deceived by those in power and whom they trusted like nuns, nurses, doctors and priests and how they continue to face legal, political and social obstacles in their search for the truth. This book also shares painstaking research which chronicles the events which led up to the development of what victims call a baby-stealing web or mafia, and which, many claim, still operates today in contemporary Spain. The book also includes up to date material which offers readers insight into the social, political and legal processes in Spain which continue to make it difficult for all victims, estimated at over 300,000, to reconcile with their long-lost family members. The reader is also given a behind-the-scenes look at how mothers were deceived by nuns, nurses, doctors and priests into thinking their baby had died only to find out later it was all a hoax to enable their baby to be sold and often smuggled out of the country. Throughout, the reader is provided insight from victims, family members who are searching for relatives, lawyers, advocates, elected officials, investigative journalists and former nuns who share first-hand knowledge of what really went on in some of the more infamous baby clinics which were run with impunity by nuns from the Catholic Church. The book closes with a discussion of the global issue of baby stealing and trafficking and what the reader can, if he or she chooses, do to make a positive difference.
