The principle has been known since Newton's laws were first applied to derive the basic theories of hydrodynamics, and even before that parabolic shapes of spinning liquids were noted by many mathematicians. In 1901 Albert Krank of Warkaue, Grand Duchy of Finland, Imperial Russia, was granted a U.S. patent for a method of capturing a liquid paraboloid in solid form. In 1908 the famed American physicist, R.W. Wood, observed the stars and planets in his spinning dish of mercury, the first scientific approach using spincasting for high precision optics.
