Book excerpt: Every morning I take my dog out for a good two hours of exercise - bicycling, running, walking, hiking - anything to get us outdoors to one of the many beautiful natural settings in and around San Francisco. Golden Gate Park, Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, the Presidio, Land's End, and the nearby Marin Headlands have all become our favorite haunts. In 2008, shortly after my 60th birthday, I began a series of paintings and poems that grew spontaneously from these daily outings. You can say it was a case of one passion leading to another. The paintings are all oil-on-canvas, 30" x 30" in size. As I wanted to share them more widely than possible through the traditional gallery, I decided to put them in book form. Because of the vivid colors, the lighthearted imagery and easily accessible poetry, many have remarked at how well-suited the book is for both children and adults, not to mention dog-lovers!For those wanting to know a little more about the art work, I've included notes on the paintings, along with photographs of the locations that inspired the imagery and poetry. There are also brief bios of myself and of my dog and muse, Nikki, the Dharma Dog.
